What is Ḵi’mola?

Ḵi’mola means ‘walking together’ in the Kwakwala language. Marion Newman, guest curator and mezzo-soprano writes: “Ḵi’mola is a program designed to highlight the importance of truly sharing and listening well to each other. Entering with the intention to learn and allow each other to take part in the leadership and responsibility of the event.

No traditional feast is ever undertaken by just one person. The entire community pitches in with their talent, energy and good will to share in the creation of the feast. This builds community and is a wonderful way to learn and grow together. Music is the perfect platform for such an undertaking and we are creating a sound feast to share with our audience while we learn to work together in good and lasting relationships.

Isabelle Eberhardt (1877-1904): explorer, nomad, journalist, novelist, Sufi. A passionate romantic and one of the most adventurous women of her era or any other, Isabelle Eberhardt was unique. At age twenty, after the death of her mother, brother and father, she left her life in Switzerland for a nomadic and unfettered existence in the deserts of North Africa. She traveled extensively through the desert on horseback, often dressed as a man, relentlessly documenting her travels through detailed journals. At age twenty-seven Isabelle drowned in a flash flood in the desert.

Share in this special evening of storytelling through song with the Calgary Phil and the trailblazing IndigiDivas! With conductor Janna Sailor, these Indigenous opera singers, along with featured special guest mezzo-soprano Marion Newman, breathe life into the music of First Nations composers from across Turtle Island, alongside fresh interpretations of opera’s greatest hits. This performance is presented in partnership with One Yellow Rabbit as part of the High Performance Rodeo.

Created by the Gryphon Trio, in collaboration with Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists from Canada and Norway, the new multimedia presentation explores the flow of knowledge and cultural treasures through the generations. As we face the dangers of climate, conflict, and environmental degradation, the work draws on resilient stories from Canada, Norway, Australia, and Mali, combining live and pre-recorded music, spoken word, and film.

Music by Indigenous composers Andrew Balfour and Eliot Britton, and European composers Victoria, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Henrik Hellsteinius. Words by Alison Mackay, Renellta Arluk, and Sámi poet Rawdna Carita Eira.Video by Dylan Toombs. Performed by mezzo soprano Marion Newman, and the Gryphon Trio. With pre-recorded performances by Nordic Voices vocal ensemble from Norway and Malian kora player Diely Mori Tounkara.
